Two people have been taken to the hospital following a fire in an apartment complex in West Haven Monday morning.
The fire broke out just after 10:30 a.m. Monday at the V.I.P. Apartments, located at 175 Canton Street. Residents tell News 8 that the fire broke out in an apartment on the third floor, triggering the evacuation of the entire complex.
One resident in the complex spoke with News 8 about how she escaped the fire.
“I heard the siren first, and thought maybe it was a drill or something. When I heard footsteps running I was like, this is not normal. Then, I quickly just grabbed my blanket… and I started jumping the stairs.”
Residents said that two people inside that apartment were taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Some residents had to be rescued by firefighters using ladders on the exterior of building.
Officials said the impacted apartment is uninhabitable. It is not known if people were inside of the unit at the time of the blaze.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
