8 ideas for family fun this weekend

News

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – It’s the time of year for apple picking, pumpkin carving, and frightening fun. If you’re looking for things to do with the whole family this weekend, here are some ideas:

The Connecticut Science center hosts a “Spooktacular” science weekend with pumpkin decorating and trick or treating Saturday and Sunday. General admission is $17 for kids, $24 for adults.

Friday and Saturday nights this month, the Shoreline Trolley Museum in East Haven is offering its “Haunted Isle” ride with tickets between $12 and $20. That’s only recommended for kids 10 and older. Younger kids can take a trolley to the pumpkin patch during the day on Saturdays and Sundays for $10.

Also on the rails, the Danbury Railway Museum lets you ride a vintage train to their pumpkin patch. It costs $12 for anyone over the age of 2, but you get free cider and cookies, and every kid gets a pumpkin. That’s on Saturdays and Sundays in October.

If your kids are old enough for something scary, the Lake Compounce Haunted Graveyard is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for all of October. Parking and tickets will cost a family of 4 well over a hundred bucks, but if you want to be spooked by professionals, this is the place to go.

The Trail of Terror in Wallingford will also give you a good scare, and everyone there is a volunteer. Tickets are $15-$20, and the proceeds all go to local charities. It’s happening Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday through the end of October.

The kids can learn a little history with the Mark Twain House “Graveyard Shift” tour. Learn about Victorian era seances and spiritualism in a house that some think is actually haunted. Tours are this Friday and Saturday night. $25 for adults, $17 for kids.

The Mystic Aquarium will be taken over by a wicked Sea Witch Saturday and Sunday as part of “Sea Scare”. Young water wizards are invited to discover her underwater world, after they craft their own hats and wands. Admission runs from $24-$33 depending on age.

The animals at the Beardsley Zoo like October, too. There’s a haunted hayride, a ghastly greenhouse and more this Saturday night, and October 27 and 28 as well. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 the night of.

Later this month, don’t forget these events:Pine Orchard Nursery School Fall FestivalOctober 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
