American Towman Spirit Ride brings attention to “Slow Down, Move Over” laws

News

(WTNH)–The American Towman Spirit Ride made its way through Connecticut on Tuesday.

The goal of the ride is to draw attention to the “Slow Down, Move Over” laws, which are often ignored. Tow truck drivers and first responders say they are put in danger when these laws are not followed.

“This law requires motorists approaching emergency vehicles with flashing lights to slow down, and move over one lane, yet according to the National Safety Commission, 71 percent of Americans have not heard of the law,” said one of the speakers Tuesday.

Drivers took a ride across the U.S. with the ceremonial casket, which honors those tragically killed in roadside accidents.

According to the Department of Labor, in 2014, 33 tow truck operators were killed while trying to rescue stranded drivers.
