(WTNH) – A well-known department store, that was headquartered in Connecticut, is expected to make its return to the state in 2023!

Ames Department Stores announced on its website that they are returning in Spring 2023.

According to the Ames Department Stores PLC LinkedIn, the project is being run by Molyneux Group, the owners of Bradlees Department Stores PLC.

WPRI reached out to the president of Cross Moline Ventures, Shannon de Molynuex, who said seven Ames Department Stores will be opening in 2023.

The first store will likely open in Connecticut, but Ames will also be opening stores in New York and Pennsylvania next year, according to de Molynuex.

The chain of discount stores was originally based in Rocky Hill and was founded by three Connecticut brothers, Milton, Irving, and Herbert Gilman, in 1958.

When asked if the Ames Department Stores will be returning to Rhode Island, de Molyneux said Rhode Island is included in their re-expansion plan, but will not open until 2024.

“We will slowly start to expand through 2024 where demand is high,” de Molyneux said.

The Ames Department Store logo will remain the same, but small attempts will be made to modernize the brand, de Molyneux said.

The company filed for bankruptcy in 1990 and again in 2002. In August 2002, the company announced it would close the remaining of its 327 stores.
