NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — We are getting to the end of the semester at most college campuses, if they aren’t done already. That makes this the most popular week for students to try selling back their books to make a few extra bucks. We are helping you stretch your dollar with an app that can help put more money in your pocket.
I talked to two former college students who know first-hand how expensive text books are and how little the return can be when you sell them back. The semester is ending and students are closing the books until next year.
Many will try to sell back the ones they’re done with, they just may not be so happy with the return. Which is why Randy, Jeremy and one other college friend developed Libro.
“We wanted to build something to help students make money and save money,” said Randy Rubenstein, Libro app co-founder.
An app that gives students a place to buy and sell textbooks at a better price for everyone.
“The whole idea originated behind the concept of buying a $300 book from the bookstore and going back and getting $20, $30 $40 dollars for it. Where you’re out a lot of money of course,” Rubenstein said.
Here’s how it works:
“You can list a book in 13 seconds, you scan the ISB in, you choose if it’s new, used, like new, whatever the options, how much you want to list it for and then you just list it. It’s done, you don’t have to worry about anything else. Just wait to get paid pretty much by the student,” Rubenstein said.
It’s taken off. The former Eastern Connecticut State University students developed it in October of last year and have already had to roll out new versions.
“Within the first couple of months our servers were shutting down so we were having a lot of complications with the server because they were getting overloaded by users all over the United States. That’s when we learned we were getting heavy usage in Puerto Rico and Canada,” said Jeremy Battye, app co-founder.
The app is free to download. When your book sells, you’ll be asked to pay a small fee to cover app maintenance.
It’s also a great way to buy books. And it’s not just limited to your campus. Students are using this across the country. So when you log in you’re buying and selling to people all over.
