Arborists prepare for Hermine

News

HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Arborists are already preparing for the possibility of Hermine reaching Connecticut.

Foreman Jamie Chambrelli briefed everyone on safety at K&J Tree Service in Hamden on Friday.

“We get out, we come up with a safe and effective plan, and we do the job safe and effectively so that nobody gets hurt,” he said.

Most accidents happen after storms. Everyone has to prepare mentally, since there could be some long and busy days ahead. Crews know what to expect.

“We are an emergency service, so we are on call 24-7, 365. So for us it’s long hours and lack of sleep,” said Rick Garner, Partner at K&J Tree Service.

Crews are already preparing equipment in case the storm hits. They’re making sure trucks are working properly and ready to go. They’re also making sure their gear is in good condition and that everybody knows how to use it.

A storm would be especially tough on trees because of the drought. The dry weather has stressed trees, and when trees are stressed they are more prone to breaking. Certain types of trees – like beech trees – are more prone to damage.

“What ends up happening is the root plates of the trees get saturated and then with the wind combined – that’s when the trees tend to uproot,” said Garner.

Crews are ready for whatever Mother Nature may bring. They’ve cleaned up after other storms, like Sandy. Their trucks will be out on the roads after Hermine – if the storm does hit.

“It’s rewarding when you’re able to respond to a call quickly, take care of a tree that may be on a structure,” said Garner.

If you have any trees by your house that you’re concerned about arborists can do preventative maintenance before a storm hits.
