Area evacuated as crews respond to fire at Norwich auto shop


NORWICH, Conn. (WTNH) — Crews responded to a fire at an auto shop in Norwich on Thursday afternoon.

The Norwich Fire Department says the two alarm fire broke out around 3:00 p.m. at Boyd’s Used Auto Parts on Corning Road.

Police have evacuated several streets in the area as crews fight the fire. A shelter was opened up at Bishop Early Learning Center so people had a place to go.

Units say explosions and the possibility of chemicals burning prompted the evacuations. The Connecticut Department of Emergency and Environmental Protection is aware of the situation but was not called to the scene.

Officials say that the fire has been contained but that crews are remaining at the scene.

There has been no word yet on a cause for the blaze.

Authorities did not say if there have been any injuries.News 8 will update this story with more information as it becomes available.
