Ask the Lawyer: Gifts that can get you in trouble

News

(WTNH)–On this edition of “Ask the Lawyer,” we speak with New Haven-based attorney Tara Knight about a couple of holiday topics. This week, of course, is filled with a lot of gift-giving, but you may not be aware that some of the gifts you’re giving are illegal.

Gifts to public officers or public employees like mailmen or teachers may be illegal in some states.

Illegal imports and counterfeit items are also against the rules. This would include counterfeit toys and those fake designer bags. Another thing to watch out for is when you are buying or sending alcohol. Some states ban certain types of alcohol (for instance, grain alcohol is illegal in Maryland), and it’s illegal to ship alcohol via USPS anywhere.
