Bellator heavyweight Matt Mitrione is the toughest stay-at-home dad you’ll meet

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (WTNH)

Bellator MMA returns to Mohegan Sun Friday night with a show highlighted by heavyweights Matt Mitrione and Roy Nelson.

The two will take part in the featured match of the night in Bellator’s Grand Prix challenge with the winner moving one step closer to the heavyweight title.

Mitrione is quite a story, fighting found him he didn’t find it.

“No, I don’t like getting punched in the face or kicked or kneed or split open or having surgeries”, says Mitrione,  “it’s the way I pay the bills, a lot of people don’t like their jobs either.”

A former college football player at Purdue and NFL player with 3 teams, including the NY Giants, Mitrione dabbled in corporate America after football.

He also started a supplement company and to help draw attention he fought in a local show as a favor to a friend. Mitrione ended up being pretty good at MMA and it landed him a spot on Season 10 of the Ultimate Fighter.

His name really exploded following a win over Kimbo Slice.

Mitrione says despite the success he’s just an average guy with a pretty cool job.

“I’m also a stay at home dad and I’m allowed to do whatever I can during the day while my kids are in school. (After training) I come home and pick them up from school, cook dinner, help with homework, go to practices with them. This job allows me the freedom to be the type of father that I want to be.”
