CHATHAM, Mass. (AP) – A Cape Cod beach was temporarily closed to swimmers after a great white shark was spotted feasting on a seal off the coast over the weekend.

Chatham Parks and Recreation Department director Dan Tobin says Lighthouse Beach in Chatham was closed just before 2 p.m. Sunday and reopened at about 3:30 p.m.RELATED: Man catches one in 2 million bright blue lobster off Cape Cod

Lighthouse Beach Patrol officials say a commercial fisherman reported seeing a bleeding seal just after 1 p.m. The shark was spotted a short time after.

Tobin says the discovery of the injured seal made it prudent to close the beach, which had about 750 guests. Swimmers were in the water at the time of the sighting, but no one was injured.

Tobin says the harbormaster’s office has boats in the area to keep an eye on the situation.
