A new local business that’s helping employ people with disabilities celebrated its grand opening on Saturday.
Beanz and Company was founded by two couples, both have daughters with down syndrome.
Beanz and Company says they welcome all individuals with and without disabilities.
The grand opening of the coffee cafe was on Saturday at 9 a.m at 300 West Main Street in Avon.
U.S. Representative Jahana Hayes attended the event.
“Businesses like this help people with intelectual disabilities because it allows them to be independent and to earn money and interact with the community. But I think more importantly businesses like this help people without disabilities because they have the opportunity to see what that looks like to see that this isn’t a community you should fear or be afraid of. If you have questions you should ask them. You begin to first see people as people and that’s what has to happen,” U.S. Representative Jahana Hayes.
A recent survery says less than half of American adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities participate in the work force. The owners of Beanz and Company say they opened the cafe in response to this issue.
