If you plan on taking a trip in 2020, you’ll want to make sure you have the right ID.
If there is no star on your driver’s license, you will no longer be able to travel unless you show other approved credentials such as a passport.
The new licenses will have a star in the top right hand corner, which will prove that the license is federally approved and meets all security standards.
If you do not have the star yet, you will have the option to upgrade to the REAL ID. You also have the option to not upgrade if you do not plan on traveling.
The old, standard license will soon be printed with the words “Not for Federal Identification” at the top.
The REAL ID will be required starting October 1st of 2020.
Other federally-approved documents such as passports will continue to be accepted.
