Red Cross volunteers are already down south helping those impacted by what was once Hurricane Michael. Several of them are from here in Connecticut.
Senator Richard Blumenthal is expected to visit the Red Cross in Farmington Friday afternoon to support their ongoing relief efforts.
Red Cross volunteers are really critical to any recovery effort after a storm, especially one of this magnitude, helping people who in some cases lost everything.
We’ve seen the devastation down south. Some neighborhoods are gone and streets look like rivers.
Some 200 Red Cross volunteers met in Orlando Thursday to get their marching orders. One of them is Joe Apicelli from Groton. News 8 spoke to him throughout the day Thursday. He’s in Tallahassee now.
He’ll be traveling to Panama City or Mexico beach, some of the hardest hit areas, setting up kitchens that will prepare tens of thousands of meals a day.
Apicelli was just down in North Carolina last month after Hurricane Florence so he’s used to the routine. Apicellis say’s he’ll be down in Florida for about three weeks.
