Fairfield Police Chief Retires


The Town of Fairfield as well as Fairfield Police Department, congratulate Chief Gary MacNamara on his retirement and wish him best of luck in his future endeavors at Sacred Heart University after working with the department since 1988.

MacNamara started as a patrol officer in 1988 and then continued to serve as a Field Training Officer and temporarily on an Auto Theft Task Force. MacNamara was named Sergeant in 1998, Lieutenant in 2001 and by 2006 MacNamara was named Captain. 

MacNamara was the lead investigator at Fairfield University in 2002, where he successfully negotiated the release of 27 students and a professor held hostage on campus. That year MacNamara was a Fairfield County Hero Award nominee and Police Officer of the Year for the Bridgeport Exchange Club. 

MacNamara was sworn in as Chief of Police in 2010. 

MacNamara graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2004 and from the FBI LEEDS Session #61 in 2009. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Law Enforcement Science and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of New Haven, Conn. 

MacNamara is an adjunct professor at POST University and will be working at Sacred Heart University.
