Family says in complaint that son was bullied at school

The family of a 14-year-old Connecticut boy they say was bullied at school has filed a federal complaint against the Norwich school system.

The U.S. Department of Education‘s Office of Civil Rights confirmed Monday it had opened an investigation into “possible disability-based discrimination.”

The boy’s father, Timothy Wilcox, tells The Day that a 14-year-old girl was charged with assault in May after jumping on his son twice, punching him, and knocking him to the floor. Wilcox said it was the culmination of two years of bullying by several students.

Wilcox says he and the boy’s mother have called administrators more than 30 times, but their complaints have gone unheeded.

Superintendent Abby Dolliver says she received confirmation of the federal complaint and is investigating. She says the school has beefed up security.
