One dead, one seriously injured in separate storm incidents in Danbury

The storms turned deadly in Danbury when a man working outside sought shelter in his truck. A tree fell on his truck, and killed him.

A teenager is also said to be seriously injured. He was on a ball field at Henry Abbott Technical High School when the roof of a dugout blew off, striking him.

News 8 spoke with Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton this evening as he was traveling around his city assessing the widespread damage.

Boughton said wind speeds were clocked at higher than 70 miles per hour.

“It’s not verified whether there was tornadic activity, but it was about as close to tornadic activity in a very heavily populated area as you can get,” Boughton said.

Boughton said school is canceled for Wednesday, and that a little bit over 25 to 30 percent of the city is without power.

A special needs shelter has been set up for people who are on oxygen machines, or who need to access electricity for their health.
