MANCHESTER, Conn. (WTNH)– A 12-year-old girl was struck by a mini-van while crossing the street in Manchester Tuesday morning.

Police say at around 7:54 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of East Middle Turnpike and Brookfield Street after a female student at Illing Middle School was struck by a Chrysler mini-van as she crossed the road.

The girl sustained a leg injury and was taken by ambulance to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford. Her injuries are not life-threatening and she remains in stable condition.

Multiple witnesses told police that the girl unexpectedly darted into the road before she was hit. Police also say it appears she was not in the marked crosswalk and that the pedestrian controls were not activated at the time of the collision. Witnesses also report that the mini-van was traveling eastbound through the intersection on a green traffic signal.

The driver was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation. The mini-van sustained minor damage in the collision.

The incident remains under investigation. Police ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them at 860-645-5560.
