Hartford PD: Man spots his stolen car, chases then beats suspect

Hartford

Three arrests were made in Hartford on Monday night after a man and his friend allegedly chased another man who stole his vehicle before beating him with a baseball bat.

Police say at around 7:45 p.m. officers responded to the intersection of Airport Road and Wethersfield Avenue to investigate a multi-vehicle accident that involved a stolen vehicle

When officers arrived on scene, they learned that the vehicle’s owner had spotted his stolen car in the south district of the city and began chasing it northbound on Wethersfield Avenue.

The driver of the stolen car then ran a red light and hit a vehicle traveling eastbound across Wethersfield Avenue, before losing control and striking a front porch on that road.

Once stopped, police say the stolen vehicle’s owner and his friend began to assault the driver with a baseball bat.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, later identified as 30-year-old Gerardo Santiago, of Hartford, was charged with larceny, reckless driving, using a motor vehicle without owner’s permission, criminal trover and breach of peace.

The other two men who allegedly assaulted him, 37-year-old Felix Cruz and 34-year-old Osniel Gonzalez, both of Hartford, were also arrested and charged with assault and breach of peace.

Cruz was additionally charged with reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without a license.
