Hartford police officer appears in court for assaulting couple

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A Hartford Police officer appeared in court Monday after allegedly attacking a couple at a motel while off-duty on Sunday.

An investigation by the supervisor of the Major Crimes Division and members of Internal Affairs alleges that Officer Joven Gonzalez, 26, of Windsor, assaulted a woman who he used to live with and a man she was with at a motel in the city. The incident allegedly occurred during the early morning hours.

The man sustained head lacerations from being struck by a firearm and sought medical attention prior to calling police. The woman sustained minor injuries from being assaulted.

Probable cause was developed during the investigation to arrest Gonzalez, who was held on a $150,000 bond.

Gonzalez was charged with assault, reckless endangerment, threatening and criminal mischief.

Gonzalez has also been subsequently suspended without pay and stripped of his police powers and badge of office.

Interim Chief of Police, Jason Thody, released the following statement on the arrest:

“I am deeply concerned with the allegations regarding the off-duty incident involving Officer Joven Gonzalez. I immediately ordered Officer Gonzalez be suspended without pay and had his police powers suspended as well. This incident does not represent the Hartford Police Department as a whole or the outstanding officers that work here. I want to commend the men and women of the Hartford Police Department that worked swiftly to investigate this case and make an arrest.”

Gonzalez had started at the academy in August 2017 and has been an officer since March 2018.

This isn’t the first time Gonzalez has been in hot water.

Back in July, he was involved in an incident in Bloomfield. Investigators say he started dating a teenage girl after he arrested her for larceny in April.

The two connected on Instagram. He says he found out she was under 18 and called off the relationship.

It all came to a head in a Bloomfield church parking lot. Gonzalez was in his Hartford police cruiser and a witness says the two were fighting and he grabbed her. He was not arrested for this particular investigation.
