Manhole explosions after underground breakers trip

Hartford

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) — West Main Street in New Britain is closed after three manholes blew up when underground breakers tripped on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Eversource, underground breakers, which carry electricity underneath West Main Street, tripped, causing three manholes to explode.

Officials at Eversource say they’ve been able to keep the power to apartments on that street due to redundant lines, but they also say the line has been badly burned from the explosion and needs to be replaced.

Officials will be sent down to clean out the hole and replace the lines.

There is no word as to when the work is expected to be complete.
