New Britain man identified as suspect in Plainville shopping mall standoff


Plainville Police have identified the suspect taken into custody following last night’s standoff at the Connecticut Commons Plaza. 

According to official reports, Plainville Police Department responded to call of a male firing a gun at the back door of Lowers Home Improvement at the Connecticut Commons Plaza Friday evening. Officers quickly located a Hispanic male suspect holding a handgun behind Dick’s Sporting Goods near the rear loading docks. Surrounding businesses were evacuated and the suspect was detained in that area. 

Police negotiated with the suspect to convince him to drop his weapon. The suspect was initially noncompliant. Emergency Response Teams (ERTs) from surroundings towns including Bristol, New BritainWest Hartford, and the State’s Attorney’s Office responded in assistance to the Plainville Police Department. 

The suspect was apprehended shortly after 5:00 PM, the suspect was successfully apprehended through the use of non-lethal force. The suspect was transported to New Britain Hospital and was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect has been identified as 44 year old Eduardo Rivera of New Britain. The handgun recovered during the incident turned out to be an unloaded, plastic BB gun.

No responding law enforcement personnel were injured nor were any civilians in the area. 

He is being charged with falsely reporting an incident in the 1st degree, interfering with an officer, breach of peace in the 2nd degree, reckless endangerment in the 1st degree, and carrying a dangerous weapon. He is currently being held on a $100,000 dollar surety bond.
