South Windsor police warn of IRS phone scam

Hartford

South Windsor Police are warning residents of a scam involving someone claiming to be the IRS on Tuesday morning.

Police say that these IRS scam calls are continuing and that local residents have also received them via cell phone.

According to police, the caller is a digitized voice that tells the recipient that there is a warrant out for them and that they need to call back.

However, the IRS does not call people on the phone. They also don’t take gift cards as payment and state and local police don’t enforce treasury laws.

Police advise anyone who receives the call to just hang up and not call back.

Below is a sample of the scam voicemail:

“…Which has been executed by the US treasury department regarding tax fraud against your name ignoring this will be an intentional attempt to avoid initial appearance before the magistrate judge or exempt jury for a federal criminal offense so before this matter goes to federal claim court house or before you get arrested. Kindly call us back on our number to reach us is 202-847-6314. Let me repeat the number is 202-847-6314. Hope to hear from you soon before the charges are pressed against you. Thank you.”
