The Grand Marshal of the Puerto Rican Parade is Hartford Police Chief Rosado

“It’s an honor, it’s an honor to be the Grand Marshal here in the city I grew up in,” says Hartford Police Chief David Rosado

His role in Saturday’s Puerto Rican Parade is symbolic – helping him celebrate his home and his roots.

“Growing-up we spoke both Spanish and English at home,” he says, noting that his parents were born and raised on the island.

The culture was always a part of his upbringing in the South End.

“Rice and beans is a part of the culture, along with music,” he says. “A typical day in our house was full of  music.”

The parade is a source of pride for many city residents.

“We have a large Puerto Rican community,” he explains.

Rosado believes this will be an emotional, poignant parade due to the thousands of Puerto Rican families affected by Hurricane Maria‘s devastation.

“The island is tough and the people are resilient.  They will get through it,” he says.

This father of four was sworn-in as police chief several months ago, bringing his connection to Hartford full circle.  Rosado says it’s a city of passionate people…many ready to celebrate at the parade.

“It’s my city, it’s our city,” he says with emotion.  “Being from Puerto Rico, it’s a win-win, a double win for me.”
