Vigil held for Hartford teen drowning victim

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) - A vigil was held Monday night to remember a teen killed last week in a drowning incident in Hartford.

16-year-old Jayvon White was found dead in the pool at Keney Park the morning of the 4th of July.

His friends told News 8 that White could not swim.

Around 7:15 p.m., his friends and family gathered at Keney Park for a candlelight prayer vigil.

"He loves everyone. He loves his friends and his family. There's not one person he won't love. If you had the pleasure to meet him, I promise you, you would have felt the same way," stated White's cousin, LaKeisha Dunn.

A surveillance system to alert police to pool trespassers was broken at the time. It has since been fixed.

Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin has directed staff to develop policies about the maintenance of city-owned security systems.
