West Hartford business hosts ice cream social for dogs

Who says we all scream for ice cream? Some bark for it!

Wagging Tails Pet Resort and Spa in West Hartford held an ice cream social for dogs Sunday afternoon.

“We all love ice cream, right? Dogs do, too,”  said owner Krista Lofquist.

The party was in part to celebrate the new indoor-outdoor dog park at their New Park Avenue location. The space includes a pool, sprinklers, and play equipment — plus it’s covered in turf to keep paws cool on hot summer days.

“Ten years ago, this is something that people would scoff at,” said Lofquist. “Pets are part of the family so why not have a place where they can do family things together?”

The ice cream is different than what you’ll find in the freezer aisle. It’s from an ice cream mix called Puppy Scoops and made with less fat and calories to better suit a dog’s digestive system.

The dogs love their cool treats, but the social part is just as important. Lofquist said it’s great for getting shy dogs to come out of their shell and become more comfortable around other dogs.

Wagging Tails dog park is open from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily. They plan on having other themed dog parties throughout the Spring and Summer.
