TORRINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) — A man from Pennsylvania was killed in a tractor-trailer crash on Route 8 North in Torrington Thursday morning, Torrington police said.
Emergency crews responded to the intersection of Greenwoods Road and Hayden Hill Road around 5 a.m. and found that a tractor-trailer had gone through the guardrail on Greenwoods Road and down a steep embankment. The cab section crashed into the shoulder area of Route 8 North while the trailer portion was partially stuck on the overpass.
The driver, identified by Torrington police as 44-year-old Mahamadou Keita of Darby, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said evidence at the scene and video surveillance footage showed that Keita was driving west on Hayden Hill Road toward the Torringford West Street intersection when the tractor-trailer hit two mailboxes.
Keita crashed through the stop sign at the intersection, then reentered Hayden Hill Road, traveling north down the hill toward the intersection with Greenwoods Road. Police said he drove through the intersection, straight through the metal guardrail system, and down the embankment.
Speed and braking appear to have been contributing factors in the crash. No other vehicles were involved.
Anyone with information or video surveillance of the area of the crash is asked to contact Torrington police Officers Mrazik or Segui at 860-489-2000.
Route 8 North was closed until 6 p.m. Friday. Hayden Hill Road from Torringford West Street reopened at 3 p.m.
