TORRINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) — One person is dead after a crash shut down a portion of Route 8 South in Torrington Thursday afternoon.

The 2015 Toyota Rav4 Limited was driving south on Route 8 near exit 45 when it exited the road to the left, drove onto the grassy median and up a dirt mound, and then “took flight” and hit the guardrail on the Wintrop Street overpass, according to a crash report. The vehicle then collided with a cement wall on Wintrop Street, about 20 feet below Route 6.

The vehicle was suspended on a telephone wire.

The crash happened at about 2:30 p.m. and shut down lanes in the area.

The driver, 82-year-old Barry Zaret, of Woodbridge, was pronounced dead at the scene.
