WATERTOWN, Conn. (WTNH) — Police are investigating after a man was found dead down a well in Watertown Thursday morning.

Officials say at around 10:30 a.m. they responded to 264 French Street to rescue a person stuck in a well. When they arrived, officers discovered 58-year-old James McAdam dead and stuck face down in a residential well that extends down about 20 feet to water.

While the well is a flat hole in the ground that is usually covered with a wood cap, the cap was moved to the side and there were tools nearby.

Police say McAdam was found about five feet down. They say he was likely there for a day or two.

According to officials, an elderly female in the home was unaware of the incident, but another family member found the victim after arriving at the residence and called 911.

Authorities say an autopsy has been done and the death appears accidental, but the cause and manner of death are pending further studies.
