Police investigate armed robbery in Watertown

WATERTOWN, Conn. (WTNH) - Police in Watertown are investigating an armed robbery that took place just after 10:00 Saturday morning at a local store.

Officials say a white or Hispanic female entered the Checkers Food Store at the intersection of Falls and Sunnyside Avenues threatening the clerk with a large knife.  

Surveillance footage of the store shows the suspect's head covered under under a winter hat and large sunglasses. 

Watertown Police say the woman grabbed cash from register and threatened a customer who tried to intervene.

The woman took off in a dark gray Mazda 6 with tinted windows with a loud exhaust. Police say the car has no front plate, but the rear license plate could contain the numbers "1579". 

The suspect fled in that vehicle on Falls Avenue towards Sylvan Lake Road. 

Investigators are asking neighbors in the area to check their home surveillance footage to assist them in identifying the suspect.

Forensic evidence was collected at the scene and will be examined.
