Woodbury’s First Selectman, William Butterly, passed away early Saturday of a suspected heart attack, according to town officials.

He died at a local area hospital at 3:00 Saturday morning.

Woodbury Selectwoman Barbara Perkinson tells News 8 Butterly was a true advocate for the town.

She says he was always visible in the community, and cared deeply about helping the residents of Woodbury.

Perkinson says the entire town is in mourning at this time. Town officials will be meeting with Butterly’s wife shortly to discuss funeral arrangements, and will decide what the town will do to honor the First Selectman.

Butterly’s brother Barry released a statement reading:

“It is with the utmost sadness to tell you the my brother William J. Butterly Jr, has passed away from a heart attack early this morning. He was also the first selectman of Woodbury Conn. Words cannot express how sad I am, prayers to his wife Judy. I feel lost. I’m so broken hearted! I love you my brother!”
