We visited Clinton where we stopped by the Picking Pot – a local favorite owned by a Clinton native.
They call themselves a “thiftique” store, because it’s not quite a thrift store but it’s not just antiques. You can find it all there, everything from custom-made furniture or salvaged pieces to make something of your own.
Owner Anthony Rock said the Picking Pot started as a more traditional thrift store.
“I was an insurance appraiser for 18 years and I did not want to get out of bed anymore,” said Rock, “so I bought it from friends of mine that had just run it for a year.”
His plan was to expand into selling furniture and more.
“We brought in some dealers to create an eclectic mix of home decor and antiques,” said Rock. “We added salvage items from reclaimed lumber to just parts and pieces that people can do projects with, and rusty metal, all those kinds of things and then doing custom pieces.”
Rock said people are pleasantly surprised when they come inside.
“When you’re outside you can see things that make you think, wow that’s just a junk shop,” said Rock, “but when you come inside it’s a little nicer, you see the painted furniture, the home decor.”
“When we were a thrift store people would think, oh let’s just stop in maybe we’ll find some treasure,” Rock said. “Now its a destination, now people say, let’s go there because we know we’ll find something good. and that gives me a good feeling to know that I’m creating something that people enjoy.”
