The Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responded to a vehicle fire on Route 9S in Haddam on Monday night.

According to the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company Facebook post, the event occurred near exit 8 on Route 9S, and the driver of the vehicle was returning from an antique auction with a loaded van and trailer. The driver heard a popping sound and pulled over to then realize a fire was in the vehicle’s engine compartment.

The driver safely escaped the burning vehicle and attempted to pull items from the van, causing minor burns to his hand.

Firefighters arrived on scene and closed both lanes until the fire was extinguished.

Firefighters pulled all burning debris from the vehicle and soaked the inside of the van to prevent the fire from reigniting.

The driver was treated on scene, but refused additional medical treatment.
