HADDAM, Conn. (WTNH) — A fire destroyed a two-story historical home on Route 154 in Haddam early Wednesday morning.

More than a dozen area departments helped put the flames out at 1236 Saybrook Rd.

Elizabeth Malloy, the executive director of the Haddam Historical Society, told News 8 the house was built in the 1790s and is identified as having historical and architectural significance.

Malloy said the house was built by Ira Shailer, a prominent settler of Haddam, and the area is known as Shailerville.

A stone chimney stack can still be seen prominently in the aftermath.

Fire officials said the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and there are no reports of any injuries.

The Haddam fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire. The state police fire and explosion investigation unit is also assisting.
