PD: Arrest made after Old Saybrook officer is exposed to fentanyl during vehicle search

Middlesex

A patrolman with the Old Saybrook Police Department was treated at a hospital after being exposed to fentanyl.

According to officials, around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, units responded to 178 Main Street for a report of a suspicious person.

At the scene, police located a man who said he just dropped off an employee at a local business and was looking to speak with that person.

The man was detained after authorities said he possessed drug paraphernalia.

During a search of the subject’s vehicle, Patrolman Christopher Palmieri was exposed to fentanyl and became ill. He was treated on scene before being transported to a local hospital.

Officers said the subject had admitted to recently snorting the drug.

Police arrested 36-year-old Stephen Johnson and charged him with various narcotics violations.

Palmieri was treated and released.
