NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A serious crash involving four cars closed Dixwell Avenue in North Haven near the Route 40 interchange for hours Friday morning.

Just before 5:55 a.m., North Haven firefighters responded to a serious crash involving four vehicles at the intersection of Dixwell Avenue and Hartford Turnpike. Upon arrival at 6:00 a.m., firefighters found the four cars involved.

According to North Haven Fire Chief Paul Januszewski, their preliminary investigation indicates that a a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling Westbound on Dixwell Avenue when it was involved in a crash with a 2005 Toyota Rav 4. The force of the crash sent the vehicles into two other vehicles that were stopped at the intersection: a 2005 Chevrolet Uplander and a 1999 Honda Civic.

Januszewski said four people were transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital:

  • A 43-year-old man from the Hyundai, with serious injuries
  • A 38-year-old woman from the Hyundai, with serious injuries
  • A 30-year-old man from the Honda
  • A 40-year-old woman from the Toyota

According to Januszewski’s news release, officials are still trying to determine which patient from the Hyundai was the driver. The patients were thrown from their seats and had to be extricated by North Haven firefighters.

The driver of the Chevrolet declined medical treatment at the scene.

Januszewski commended his firefighters for their quick response.

This was a very serious crash involving multiple vehicles and multiple patients. I want to commend our firefighters for their diligent work in assessing the patients and rescuing multiple trapped occupants,”

The investigation into the crash continues. Dixwell avenue was reopened by midday Friday.
