Amazon.com adding more recruiting events for holiday jobs

New Haven

MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH) – Today it was a recruiting event at the Workforce Alliance American Job Center. There are several of those centers in the state. Every day they help people with job skills and to get new jobs. Today is special at the one in Meriden, however, because the focus is on Amazon.com. The giant online retailer is looking to hire.

“It’s a good company to work for. It’s part time, which is what I’m looking for,” said Jill Groves of Naugatuck as she waited for her job interview.

She has plenty of company. Dozens of people are showing up for a series of hiring events.

“Our warehouse in Wallingford, we use sortation associates, so they sort boxes into different zip codes just so we can get them out faster,” said Amazon.com Senior Staffing Coordinator Ciara Rogers.

The need for workers goes up around the holidays, so Amazon is hiring people to work around 20 hours a week at $12.50 an hour. There is also possibility of advancement within the company, plus Amazon is going to build a new fulfillment center in North Haven, and they will want experienced people for that. If Amazon is not for you, these Workforce Alliances offices offer all kinds of help.

“These are open to the public to come in for job search assistance, resume help,” said Workforce Alliance Communications Director Ann Harrison. “We have workshop open to the public on everything from interviewing to filling out online job applications.”

Today’s event is one of several Amazon is holding. There are more coming up in New Haven for day and night shifts, plus they’re about to start hiring for the 3:30 am shift.

“We need about 250 people for that. Like I said, we’re always hiring, so that’s going to be at the Wallingford Marriott on Thursday and Friday from 12-4,” Rogers said. “We have walk-in hours those days.”

There is another Amazon hiring event at Workforce Alliance in New Haven on Wednesday.

Then another, also at Workforce Alliance in New Haven next Monday.
