NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– New Haven police are investigating after the body of a woman was found in the Quinnipiac River Sunday morning.
Police say just after 11 a.m., firefighters and patrol officers were dispatched to a water rescue in the Quinnpiac River, below the south end of the Grand Avenue Bridge, near Front Street. Officials then found the body of a deceased black woman in shallow water. While detectives say they suspect that it may be a suicide or possibly an accidental drowning, they have launched an investigation and the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy.

Police say on the same morning, the family of a 19-year-old New Haven woman reported their relative missing. The report says that she was despondent when she was last seen on Saturday around 7 p.m. Police say that the cases are likely of the same woman, however her name will be withheld until she is positively identified.

Traffic was slowed down on the Grand Avenue Bridge during investigation.
