HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The civil rights project director at the Boston-based GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders earns honorary Quinnipiac University degree.

Quinnipiac University President John L. Lahey presented the honorary degree to Mary Bonauto on Sunday.

At the ceremony, Bonauto told the 75 graduates of the Quinnipiac University School of Law that lawyers have “superpowers” they should use to play a crucial role in a society committed to the rule of law.

“That degree can be used to save the life of a person on death row, to gain asylum for a person fleeing persecution, to get a young person out of juvenile detention and back in school, or to obtain protection for a person in an abusive relationship,” she said at the ceremony held at the TD Bank Sports Center at Quinnipiac.

Bonauto, who also received an honorary doctorate from Quinnipiac, has litigated in the state and federal courts of New England on discrimination issues, parental rights, free speech, religious liberty and relationship recognition.

In 2015, she successfully argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in the historic case, Obergefell v. Hodges, which guaranteed same-sex couples nationwide the right to marry.
