Canal Dock Boathouse enters final phase of construction in New Haven

New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) —  City and state lawmakers are celebrating the final phase of the Canal Dock Boathouse. It comes three years after leaders broke ground on the boathouse back in September of 2013.

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) joined New Haven Mayor Toni Harp, local and federal officials to announce progress on the boathouse. The boathouse is a key element to the resurgence of New Haven’s Long Wharf.   It is one of several projects meant to revitalize the area.

Congresswoman DeLauro helped secure $27.2 million in federal highway funding as a mitigation payment for the expansion of the I-95 Pearl Harbor memorial “Q” Bridge. That construction led to the demolition of the historic Adee Boathouse in 2007. The new facility will incorporate elements of the Adee Boathouse is scheduled to be completed by late fall 2017. It will provide a destination for water-dependent activities, such as rowing, and kayaking, and provide spaces for gatherings to foster community activities around the water. The project will also provide a locale for environmental education related to the history, culture and natural environment of New Haven Harbor and the Long Island Sound.

The two-story boathouse, which is designated to sustain flooding, will be 30,000 square feet and will sit atop a 1.12-acre platform. Besides functioning as a boathouse, it will also tell the story of New Haven Harbor’s natural and cultural environment through interpretive displays about New Haven history, including the Connecticut Freedom Trail.

The boathouse will be owned by the City of New Haven but will be operated by Canal Dock Boathouse inc., a nonprofit with a mission of increasing education and awareness of Long Island Sound and local history and improving public access to New Haven’s waterfront.
