Fan bus passenger: "I thought bus driver was dead"

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) - A coach bus carrying Princeton football fans crashed into the Anderson Glass building at 807 Campbell Ave Saturday morning.

According to West Haven police, the bus was carrying 36 students from Princeton University. The students were on their way to the Princeton versus Yale football game. A total 4 students and the driver have been transported to the hospital for treatment.

The students who weren't injured were transported via another bus to the game.

A student who was on that bus spoke exclusively with News 8.

He said it was frightening on that bus. Right after it happened, he and one of his friends came to the driver's aid lifting debris off of him when he was trapped in that bus.

The student we talked to is named Bryant.

He described what it was like inside that bus when it crashed into the building,  how he and his friend came to the bus driver's aid, and what the bus driver mumbled to him that may explain why the bus crashed.

"I just heard 'oh my god oh my god'. Things were just flying around and once we hit the building, a bunch of debris was crashing through glass. I got glass all over me. honestly it was like a real miracle that nobody got really, really injured. The bus driver was completely covered in debris. My first reaction was honestly I thought he was dead. We just held this wooden board up until the fire department could arrive so he can breathe. When Sean and I were lifting up the board he was kind of like talking -- he was really fazed -- he kept saying the brakes just weren't working -- the brakes failed, the brakes failed."

Police say they believe the bus brakes failed, causing the crash.

Campbell Avenue with remain shutdown while the investigation continues.

Princeton University has released a statement stating in part:
