NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Crews are investigating the cause of a massive fire at a New Haven scrap yard Friday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the Alderman-Dow scrap yard at 358 Chapel St. just after noon. Smoke could be seen from I-95.

“There are various types of metals that come in here, even batteries, and cars,” Assistant Chief Terrence Rountree said. “So, if there are any leftover fluids in the tanks, or any leftover oil in the engines, that could be possible ignition sources.”

Roundtree said one firefighter was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. An employee at Alderman-Dow said no one was injured and no equipment was damaged.

There does not appear to be any remaining hazards, fire officials said.
