Heart gallery opens at Milford CT post mall, children looking for forever families

New Haven

MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH)–There are about 30 kids in the Heart Gallery. Each child is looking for what many of us take for granted sometimes, a family.

It’s the reason why Ellen Leffingwell volunteered 7 years ago to take pictures for the gallery. Children give their permission to get their picture taken and tell their story in hopes they’ll get adopted.

“They had no photographers to photograph a couple kids,” said Ellen Leffingwell who also works for the Department of Children and Families. Leffingwell snapped this picture of a set of twins, but this photo shoot was different.Related: Exhibit to feature photos of children waiting for adoption

“Their social worker was like ‘Hey there’s a little spark happening here’ because we just spent a couple of hours hanging out with them and playing with them.”

The couple always knew they wanted kids. Finally they had found them. They soon became mom and dad.

“We just knew we loved them from the day we met them,” said Leffingwell.

That’s the connection these other 30 children are looking for. It’s why the Milford Connecticut Post Mall gave a space for a permanent Heart Gallery. You can see portraits, read their bios, and use your phone to watch their videos.

“When children find their forever family, it’s happy but it’s sad that they even had to be in that place to begin with. That should never happen kids should always be in a safe loving home,” said Leffingwell.

The Connecticut Post Mall has offered a space for the heart gallery indefinitely.
