NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Hundreds of students in New Haven were given a leg up by getting a backpack pack filled with supplies.

It happened Tuesday at the Ross Woodward Classical Studies Magnet School.

The Patchwork Organization donated more than 700 backpacks to children in the Elm City.

Superintendent Garth Harries says they want to help send a message to students that the entire community is invested in their education. He says teachers are also being invested in with symposiums and classes

“We introduced new teachers to New Haven to cultural competence and social justice thinking so that they could better understand the experience of our students,” Harries told News 8.

The first day of school for New Haven students is on Thursday.
