‘I feel like a second class citizen’- Protest at Seymour Post Office

New Haven

SEYMOUR, Conn. (WTNH)–  A small group of protesters gathered in front of Seymour’s post office as they demanded handicap accessibility.

Joseph Luciano uses a wheelchair to get around and for about four years they let him use this ramp in the back.

Around Thanksgiving this past year, he was told it wasn’t safe to go through the parking lot. Luciano says they told him he could make appointments on the sidewalk for his post office errands.

“I filed a complaint with the Department of Justice, but would you believe it? The DOJ has absolutely no jurisdiction over the United States Postal Service,” said Luciano.  “Well, this is terrible. I really feel terrible. I fee like a second class citizen.”

He says the DOJ told him to hire a private attorney which he say he can’t afford.  About a dozen people showed up to the protest today from the Center for Disability Rights.  U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, and Rep.Rosa DeLauro have said they support this group.

“The United States Postal Service should immediately restore equal access to the Seymour Post Office.  Individuals with disabilities should not encounter unnecessary and discriminatory barriers when seeking access to the post office.   The USPS current remedy is offensive and it must do better to serve all their customers, regardless of disability,” said Blumenthal (D-Conn.)
