Immigrant rights group looks to change name of Columbus Day in New Haven

New Haven

There’s a push to give Columbus Day a name change in the Elm City.

An immigrant rights group is rallying at New Haven City Hall on Thursday night ahead of a Board of Alders meeting.

They want the alders to permanently change the holiday to “Indigenous People’s Day,” saying it’s hurtful against certain indigenous cultures.

The proposal has met some opposition from local Italian-American groups who celebrate Columbus.

The board meeting began at 5:45.
