Last rush for Easter treats on Good Friday

New Haven

ANSONIA, Conn. (WTNH) —  A lot of people had today off from work, but for some businesses, this is one of the busiest days of the year. At places selling traditional Easter meats and baked goods, lines were out the door.

One of those is the Europol Deli in Downtown Ansonia. The tiny store gets packed with people this time of year, mostly looked for meat.

“Polish Easter wouldn’t be meaningful if there wasn’t a ham and kielbasa on the table,” explains Europol owner Maria Kuna. Her store carries one of the biggest selections around, from regular, to smoked, to coarse ground.

“They have very good kielbasa,” said Oxford resident Steve Sokol as he waited in line. “And it’s a local place.”Related Content: The average person expected to spend $146 on Easter

A local place with local people who have worked very hard to get ready for this weekend.

“We’ve been getting ready for the entire month,” explained Kuna. “We have to pre-order a lot of merchandise, but the kielbasi and the babkas come fresh this week.”

For fresh babkas, Europol has some competition right across Ansonia’s Main street. Eddy’s Bake Shop has traditional Easter treats for everybody.

“We sell a lot of babkas, strudels, pizzagaina, so we’re connecting with a lot of different ethnic backgrounds,” said owner Paul Ciocca.

He says he will sell two thousand babkas just in these two days alone. He and his staff spent weeks preparing. In fact he worked until he was…blue in the hands. Literally, his hands were dyed blue with food coloring as he spoke to News8.

Europol Deli & Gifts is located at 354 Main Street in Ansonia. Eddy’s Bake Shop is across the street at 317 Main Street.
