Lawyer: Officer thought man had gun when shooting at couple

New Haven

A lawyer for a Connecticut police officer under investigation for shooting at an unarmed couple in a car says the officer believed the driver had a gun while getting out of the vehicle.

Attorney Elliot Spector also said Tuesday that Hamden Officer Devin Eaton believed the man was shooting at him.

Spector says Eaton initially did not know a Yale University officer had arrived at the scene and also fired at the driver. Spector says Eaton believed the other gunshots he heard came from the driver.

Spector’s comments were the first provided publicly on behalf of Eaton in connection with the April 16 shooting in New Haven.

The police gunshots missed the driver but wounded 22-year-old Stephanie Washington, who survived.

The couple’s relatives believe the shooting was not justified.
