The Milford Police Department tells News 8 the mall closed at 7:30pm Wednesday. Multiple officers responded.
Fights started breaking out at around 4:00pm Wednesday, according to police.
One teen has been arrested.
No injuries were reported.
Cops then began pushing thousands of shoppers and brawlers out of the mall on what is being described as one of the busiest shopping days of the year.
Police say multiple fights involving as many as a dozen teens at one time….broke out in locations throughout the mall.
Officers say they anticipated trouble and brought an additional 6 off duty officers to back up mall security.
“We’re talking 80% of the people in the mall are unsupervised teens and they started bumping into each other, the noise starts, the talking starts. So, we have officers trying to continuously separate them, calm them down, send them on the way. All the while trying to protect the patrons who are shopping here. It just got to be too much. We could not control the crowd of angry, hostile teens”, said Officer Michael DeVito of the Milford Police Department.
Mall officials have released the following statement:
“Due to incidents this evening at other shopping centers in Connecticut, we decided to close the mall early as a precautionary measure as the safety and well being of our guests is our top priority.”
