According to officials, on Saturday around 3:00 a.m., police conducted a motor vehicle stop on Interstate 95 after seeing a car traveling without any head lights activated.
During the stop, Connecticut State Troopers developed probable cause to conduct a vehicle search.
While the search was being conducted, units said they discovered a loaded firearm and magazines for other firearms.
Officers said the driver, identified as 20-year-old Derrick Smith, had previous weapons offenses.
He was subsequently arrested and charged with criminal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle and other related charges.
Smith was unable to post bond and is awaiting trial.
