NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — New Haven police are investigating two shootings that happened in the Elm City Wednesday.
Just before 4 p.m. New Haven police learned of a shooting near Winchester Avenue and Hazel Street. Police say 18-year-old Derrick Smith of New Haven was shot in the arm and taken to the hospital. He is in police custody at the hospital because there was an active warrant for him for carrying a pistol without a permit.
Police say the shooter was on the loose.
Around 6:30 p.m., police were called to the area of Shepard and Newhall Streets for another shooting. There, another 18-year-old was shot several times. He is in the hospital in critical condition.
New Haven police have not said if they believe the two shootings are connected.
